Buzzaround XLS Scooter

Scooters have arrived for Spring!

It’s that time of year again! The sun is out, temperatures are rising and flowers are starting to pop up from the ground.  Spring is here! One of the best things about spring is being able to enjoy it outdoors.  If you are one of many American’s who struggle with their mobility, spring may not seem as enjoyable as it used to.  Just because your mobility may not be as good as it once was, doesn’t mean you should sit on the sidelines.  Get outdoors this spring with a new scooter!

There is a new scooter in town this year, and it definitely will help you enjoy life again! That new scooter is the one and only Buzzaround XLS scooter from Golden Technologies.  The Buzzaround XLS comes in both 3 and 4-wheel models and features:

  • 300 lb. weight capacity

  • Ultra Bright LED headlight standard

  • Charging port below the control panel

  • 3 inch ground clearance

  • Red and Blue Shroud panels included FREE

  • Disassembles quickly and easily for transport

  • NEW Comfort Spring Suspension for a smoother ride

This scooter is the best travel scooter on the market!  You can even take the battery pack out of the scooter and charge just the battery pack, making it convenient for keeping your scooter in your vehicle for traveling.

So don’t stay cooped up indoors this spring.  Enjoy it outside on a brand new scooter! We have both the 3 and the 4-wheeled models in-stock.  Stop by and give one a test drive today!  We will even show you how quickly they can come apart!

For anyone who purchases a new scooter during the month of March, we will enter your name into a drawing to win 4 FREE Dayton Dragons baseball tickets!  P.s. They are handicap seats too!

3 Reasons a Lift Chair Would Make the Perfect Gift this Holiday Season (and how you can save BIG!)

Holiday season is right around the corner, and you may find yourself stuck trying to figure out what to get Mom or Dad for Christmas this year. It’s often difficult to find gifts that are not only enjoyable but functional as well. Before you fill their house with holiday candy, sweaters, and other items they may not necessarily need, make sure you consider the item that may make things easier on them (and you!) for years to come.

Lift Chairs: The Perfect Gift for Mom or Dad

If you notice Mom or Dad has been struggling to get in and out of their chair lately, or has become seemingly weak when it comes to everyday activities, a lift chair may be the perfect gift for your loved one this holiday season! Lift chairs present a myriad of advantages for seniors, such as:

  • Independence
  • Reduced risk of injury
  • Ease of mobility
  • Opportunity to remain in home
  • More spacious than normal chairs

However, they also pose a multitude of benefits for caregivers as well, such as:

  • Saving time
  • Increasing safety
  • Avoiding Injury

Aside from these advantages, lift chairs allow for reduced stress between the caregiver and their senior loved one (What a blessing that would be!). Make life easier for both you and your aging loved one this holiday season, and give them something they’ll really appreciate! At New Visions, we offer lift chairs to fit the style and comfort needs of all individuals. Choose from a wide range of endless style options to help increase mobility and comfort for your loved one today!

P.S. This month only we are offering 10% off ALL lift chairs! Stop in today to try one out or give us a call at 419.678.4979 for more information!

Ask Sarah: Will Medicare Pay for Scooters

Sarah,

As my mother ages, she becomes less and less independent and more dependent on myself and my siblings. I think it is time for her to get a motorized scooter to help her get around easier; however, I am concerned about the costs and what exactly Medicare will cover. Do you have any insight to offer on when Medicare will help pay for a scooter?

Thanks for your help.

Gina –Greenville, Ohio

Hi Gina,

I understand your concerns entirely. It is important that your mom get a motorized scooter as soon as possible in order to help her get around more efficiently and take some of the stress off of you and your siblings; however, Medicare, like you said, can be an extremely confusing topic. Here are some tips to help you determine when Medicare will cover paying for a motorized scooter:

Remember, Medicare may not cover the entire cost of the scooter. There will likely be a 20% cost that you have to cover; however, sometimes this, too, can be covered by insurance.

Gina, we would love to have the opportunity to help your mom find the perfect scooter to fit her everyday needs. Please feel free to give me a call personally at 419.678.4979 or stop in today to look around!

I hope this information is helpful for you and your family.

Ask Sarah: How Can I Convince My Aging Parent They Need a Lift Chair?

Dear Sarah,

My mother has recently been admitted into the nursing home due to her hip surgery, and my father has quickly been losing his strength, especially now that my mom isn’t around to help him do things around the house. I have noticed recently that he has a hard time getting in and out of his recliner. When I suggested he look into getting a lift chair, he completely shut down and stopped listening to me. I think he is afraid that purchasing a lift chair would mean he is losing his independence. Can you help me convince him to see the benefits of purchasing a lift chair? I don’t think he realizes how much it could help him.

Thanks for your advice!

Tammy -Ohio City

Hi Tammy,

Making the transition and admitting that you need more assistance is never an easy feat, especially for our senior loved ones as they age and are unable to do things as easily as they once could. However, it doesn’t have to be. Is your father aware of the many benefits of a lift chair, or were you unable to talk to him at all when you mentioned a lift chair?

Now that your father should have had some time to cool off, I suggest approaching the situation again, but in a more casual tone. Don’t make him feel like he has to purchase a lift chair, but instead list the many benefits (see below) a lift chair could bring him. Maybe try to make a fun afternoon out of going to your local medical equipment store and testing out lift chairs.

Try sitting in a lift chair along with him (bring your kids, too!) so that he doesn’t feel as if he is being pressured. I strongly believe that once your father sits in a chair and realizes how it can help him regain his independence–not hinder it–you will have no problem convincing him (heck, you may not even have to convince him!) to purchase a lift chair.

Here are a few of the many benefits a lift chair can bring:

  • Independence
  • Opportunity to remain in home
  • Ease of mobility
  • More spacious than normal chairs
  • Reduced risk of injury (this one is particularly important, especially now that your mom is no longer living at home!)

I hope you find my advice helpful and that your father sees the importance and advantages of purchasing a lift chair. If you have any further questions, or would like to try out a lift chair in person, please feel free to stop in or give us a call at 419.678.4979.

Ask Sarah: Mobility Rebates at Car Dealerships

Hi Sarah-

My mom has recently started using a wheelchair due to getting older and having a harder time getting around. Because I am an only child and my father passed away 5 years ago, I take her, by myself, to and from all doctor appointments, family parties, and any other events she may want to attend. The vehicle I currently drive has become a nuisance and I have considered either looking for a newer vehicle that is more user-friendly to my mother’s needs or updating my current vehicle if possible. I heard that some car dealerships offer mobility rebates for disabilities. Is this true? Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your help!

Susan -Fairfield, OH

Hi Susan,

I can understand how it may be extremely challenging getting your mother in and out of your vehicle, especially as she is confined to a wheelchair most of the time. I have many clients who also experience this same problem.

Luckily, there are many original equipment manufacturers who offer rebate assistance (typically valued for up to $1000 reimbursement!) when you purchase accessibility products. Some common equipment manufacturers that offer rebates to customers include:

  • Toyota
  • Chrysler
  • Ford
  • GM
  • Lexus
  • Volvo
  • Acura
  • Hyundai
  • Honda
  • Nissan

The list of manufacturers who offer these rebates goes on and on. Not only does the addition of items such as interior lifts, exterior lifts, power lift gates and other accessibility features allow for easier maneuvering in and out of vehicles, but it can also offer seniors the independence and assistance they need to continue driving on their own.

For more information on how you can access and retrieve special discount offers from various manufacturers, you can visit the ride-away website, NMEDA website, or call us at 419.678.4979 for more information today!  We are offering 50% off of installation of a new vehicle lift until the end of August!

I hope this information helps you make the decision on either purchasing or updating your current car.

Top 6 Questions to Ask When Buying a Scooter

Purchasing a scooter can be a time-consuming, headache-causing and frustrating process –but it doesn’t have to be! If you go into the scooter-buying process with an open mind (and a little behind-the-scenes knowledge from yours truly!) you will walk away with a smile on your face and the scooter of your dreams. It’s all about knowing what to ask beforehand in order to get what you NEED.

6 Things to Ask When Purchasing a Scooter

  1. Will the scooter be used primarily indoors, outdoors, or both? This is important for not only you to know the answer to, but also for the scooter specialist. Knowing where you will be using the scooter can help determine what brand and type (durability) of scooter you may need.
  2. Will you need to transport your mobility scooter when traveling? Will you be going on family vacations where you need to take your scooter with you? Unless you have a large vehicle that can easily transport a larger scooter, you may need to consider looking into a compact scooter. Likewise, you may want to check with your local transportation authority for information regarding any size restrictions that you may need to be aware of when traveling long distances.
  3. Does it have the accessories and storage you are looking for? Don’t expect your scooter to have closet-like storage or Yacht-like accessories; however, don’t give in and settle for less than you deserve. Make sure the scooter you are looking for has any extra accessories or storage space you may desire, such as a second basket.
  4. How much do you plan on spending on your scooter? Prices can greatly vary depending upon various features, brands, new vs old, among many other items. For example, do you want a scooter with arm rests? If so, make sure you figure that into your budget. Do your research ahead of time and go into your shopping extravaganza with a budget in mind.
  5. Is the scooter comfortable for you to sit in? This may seem like an obvious statement, but it is important that you know what you are purchasing before you actually purchase it. The downside of purchasing a scooter online is you don’t have the chance to sit in the scooter and make sure it is the right fit for you. Shopping local at a store near you can allow you to test out various scooters and make sure you are pleased with what you are getting.
  6. What is the weight load on the scooter? This refers to all of the weight-bearing-stress being placed on (or in) the scooter at any one time. If you are overweight or have to carry heavy items on your scooter at times, you want to make sure the scooter expert you are working with is aware of this so that they can find the right scooter to fit your needs.

Finding the right scooter to fit your everyday needs is important. That is why we, at New Visions, focus on making your scooter shopping experience both positive and personalized, to find you the scooter of your dreams!

P.S. This month ONLY we are offering $100 off all new scooters! Give us a call at 419.679.4979 or stop in to test drive and get your very own scooter today!

Ask Sarah: 3 Ways Stairlifts Benefit Mom and Dad

Dear Sarah,

Both of my parents have recently had trouble getting up and down the stairs to the second floor of their house where their bedroom is located. I have read some recent articles about stairlifts on the internet and I think installing a stairlift in their home would help them to get around, but I’m not sure how to approach my parents on the topic. I know they want to regain their mobility and independence, which is why I think the installation of a stairlift may be a good idea. Do you have any advice on how to get my parents to consider the addition of a stairlift?

Carol, Coldwater, OH

Hi Carol,

It sounds like the addition of a stairlift would be the perfect fit for both your mom and your dad! I know that sometimes as our parents age, they do worry about their independence. And while they may see a stairlift (at first) as a hindrance of their freedom, in reality, the addition of a stairlift to one’s home is a great benefit. We need to help our parents embrace the idea because it will allow them to continue to do the things they have always done so well on their own, but easier this time!

Try asking your parents if the following factors are important to them as they age and struggle with their mobility:

  1. The ability to carry everyday items and move between floors safely, reducing the possibility of injury.
  2. Remaining in the comfort of their own home.
  3. Maintaining their confidence and independence no matter what their age.

Installing a stairlift can help your parents maintain all of the above benefits, and much, much more. Likewise, I have had several customers who were surprised at how cost-friendly the installation of a stairlift was. While one may think the installation is extremely out-of-budget, they typically soon realize (after having the discussion) that installing a stairlift is much more budget-friendly than the addition of other in-home elevators and other lift devices.

At New Visions, we want you and your parents to know that we care about the safety and well-being of all of our current, potential and future customers. Together, we work with you to find the best fit for your needs. If you and/or your parents have any questions at all about the benefits of our stairlifts or any other products we offer, please feel free to give me, Sarah, a call personally at 419.678.4979.

I hope my answers give you and your parents a little more insight on the importance of finding the right stairlift in order to ensure the proper safety and desired independence levels for your mom and dad.

Thank you.

Intergenerational Vacations Can Be Fun!

You’ve decided it is time for a family vacation and you want to take everyone (including your mom and dad) on the trip. But how do you begin the planning to make it fun for your children and your parents? Here are some quick tips to make vacationing with your parents both fun and easy!

4 Tips for Family Fun on Vacation

  1. Remember there are laws that assist you.

When you are traveling, remember that the American Disabilities Act requires that you get assistance when you are traveling with parents or kids with special needs. This includes access to ALL facilities you travel to and free wheelchairs upon arrival to your destination. However, you can travel with your own mobility device and that is just as easy. Remember to follow all directions to keep your mobility device in top condition when traveling.

  1. Consider hiring a health care aid.

Depending on your budget, you can hire a health care specialist to help eliminate stress while you are vacationing. This is a great way to make sure you have extra hands and eyes on your aging parents so you can be attentive to their needs and make sure everyone is enjoying the vacation together.

  1. Trip insurance can be helpful.

Intergenerational trips can be a blast for everyone, but don’t get caught up in the anxiety that plans could change. Do your due diligence with research about trip insurance in case there is an emergency and the travel plans change. Also look at healthcare insurance for traveling. There are many options and your current plan might have travel insurance as well. Having proper insurance when you travel alleviates a lot of headaches and makes the trip more enjoyable for everyone.

  1. Communication makes the day fun!

The goal of a family trip is to make sure everyone enjoys the trip and each other. This means you need to communicate honestly with your parents about their limitations and what they feel comfortable doing. Having the conversation before the trip is best so no one is put on the spot or feels bad if they cannot participate in an activity.

Creating a trip this summer with your parents and kids can be a fun experience and create many long-lasting memories. With proper planning you can make sure mom and dad can get around and enjoy the tip with you and their grandchildren!

Top 5 Features to Consider When Buying a Scooter

Is it seemingly getting more and more difficult to get around your home? What about getting in and out of the grocery store? Aging can sometimes make it hard for us to admit we need help with our mobility. Don’t be embarrassed! Mobility scooters are popular because they help you maintain your independence and get around—with ease, might I add—in your everyday life.

Purchasing a scooter can seem like a tedious task. How do you do it? Where do you start? Where do you go? It doesn’t have to be that way! That is why the team members at New Visions Medical have put together the top 5 things you should consider when purchasing a scooter.

5 Considerations When Purchasing a Scooter

  1. Maximum weight capacity. We never want to talk about weight, but it’s essential when it comes to buying a mobility scooter. If you weigh over 250 lbs., then you may need to purchase a more durable scooter to help you get around most efficiently. Every mobility scooter has a maximum weight capacity for optimum performance. You need to make sure you find the right one for you.
  2. Ease of maneuverability. Where do you plan to use the scooter? If you plan to use the scooter in a supermarket or home, you may need a scooter that has a tighter turning radius. A 3-wheeled scooter is known for having the best turning radius; however, you still want to make sure it fits your other needs, too. When purchasing a scooter, ask the provider to demonstrate the turning capability so you can make sure it fits your needs for your everyday tasks.
  3. Flexibility and comfortability of arms and seat. If you will be getting in and out of your scooter on a regular basis, you will want arms that rotate back and allow you to get on and off the scooter with ease. In regards to the seat, if you are getting on and off the scooter frequently, the standard seat is should be suitable for your needs. But if you plan to spend the majority of your time on your scooter, consider looking into a more comfortable seat that has extra padding. If you are going to be on your scooter most of your time throughout your day, the last thing you want is to be uncomfortable!
  4. How easy it will transport. A commonly overlooked factor when purchasing a scooter is how easy it will be to transport. This is a very important element to your scooter purchase and should not be overlooked. How can you transport your scooter with ease? If you plan to travel with your scooter, you want one that can be dismantled easily or one that you can load and take with you without a hassle. This can often be a challenge because you really don’t know how easy it will be to load it into your car until you try! Practice with a scooter at the store before you make your purchase in order to ensure you are getting what you need.
  5. Where it will be used. Think about how you live day to day. Will you use your scooter in your home or outside more? These are important factors to consider when selecting your scooter. If you will be using over a rough terrain, you should consider a 4-wheeled scooter. But if your scooter will be used mostly indoors or tight spaces in your home, consider looking at the various options for 3-wheeled scooters. These factors all play an important role in the type of scooter you will want to make your day-to-day tasks much simpler.

We know that selecting a mobility scooter is not an easy task, but is one that needs careful consideration in order to properly meet your daily needs. If you think a scooter might be the right choice for you or your loved one, be sure to check out our products page, or give us a call us at 419.678.4979 to discover how New Visions Medical can help you find the right scooter for your needs!
