5 Reasons to Shop Local this Holiday Season

With the holidays right around the corner, now is the perfect time to determine where you will do your shopping. Where you choose to shop can not only affect the economy, but also the environment. Because the holidays are quickly approaching, we know the number of advertisements we see on television, the internet billboards, and print magazines, newspapers, etc., will quickly soar. However, caught in the middle of all of the hustle and bustle large retailers bring during the holiday season, are the small, local businesses. Why should you consider buying local this holiday season, rather than investing in gifts from the big-box retailers? We have pulled together 5 spectacular reasons below!

Benefits of Shopping Locally

  1. Create more jobs. Small businesses are among the largest employers in the country and offer a multitude of jobs, particularly to those in the local community. Not only do independent businesses employ more individuals per each dollar of revenue, but they also are the customers of local accountants, wholesalers, farmers, printers, etc. Support your local businesses, and you will create jobs for your friends, your loved ones, and even yourself.
  2. Keep the community unique, and let it thrive. There is nothing more fulfilling than watching a small community develop and thrive as the years roll along. Where you shop, eat, and have fun are what helps make your community a HOME and adds a unique sense of character to the area. Plus, studies show that entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to settle in communities that recognize, support and preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses, helping the community to continue to grow and be successful.
  3. Local businesses give back (chain stores [typically] do not). Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future. In other words, local businesses, no matter what, are more likely to “do good” for the community and support local causes within the community.
  4. Achieve and receive more diversity. Typically, smaller businesses have a far greater diversity in products and services than that of chain stores. How often do you walk into a chain store and know (for the most part) what you will find? Not in a small business! Small businesses often add an element of surprise in their inventory –because of their ability to be more diverse!
  5. Support yourself. Let’s face it, you’re not just supporting the local businesses, but you’re also in turn supporting YOURSELF. Multiple studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, instead of a large, nationally owned business, a much greater chunk of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms which helps to strengthen the economic base of the community. What else does this mean? A greater percentage of local businesses helps keep your taxes lower!

Ask Sarah: Portable Ramps for the Holidays

Dear Sarah,

My mom recently fell and broke her hip, which means she is now confined to a wheelchair, even over the upcoming holiday months. What are your suggestions for the best way to get her around (easily) this holiday season with her wheelchair? She doesn’t want to be a burden, but we also don’t want her to miss out on all of the quality time with her loved ones this holiday season.

Thanks in advance,

Holly in Columbus, Ohio

Hi Holly,

I completely empathize and understand your concern with wanting your mother around for the holidays. Yet, I also understand that lugging a wheelchair around can be a lot of work, especially when carrying presents, food, etc. for your holiday parties. It seems as if helping your mother get in and out of the location (whether it be a family or friend’s home, a hall rented for Christmas, etc.) will be your largest challenge. While you may be able to lift the wheelchair with your mother in it with the help of several strong helpers, the more simple option, and one which may come in handy in the future, is a portable ramp.

Because not all homes (and let’s be honest, most homes in general) are not built with a wheelchair in mind, it is nice to have a portable ramp that can be taken with you and used in any home environment to get you or your loved one safely inside without any hassle.

Some benefits of a portable ramp include:

  • Lightweight, yet strong
  • Can fold up and take with you anywhere
  • Versatile in size and shape
  • May have warranty options
  • Can be split into multiple sections
  • Easy to use and install

Not only can this ramp help your loved one get into their home, but it can also help them with getting in and out of vehicles, etc. At New Visions, we believe that the addition of a portable ramp could greatly help your mother achieve accessibility and safety without jeopardizing your time.

If you would like more information on our portable ramp selection, give us a call today at 419.678.4979 today or visit our products page!

Thanks!

On Your Feet All Day Long? Let Us Help Relieve the Pain!

Do you work on your feet for over 6 hours a day? Did you know that doing so can have negative effects on your body, particularly the oxygen flow to your legs? Luckily, compression socks can help diminish the side effects.

Compression socks help to improve blood flow to your legs. In particular, they work to gently squeeze your legs in order to properly move blood flow through and up your legs. Not only does this help to reduce swelling in your legs and feet, but it also works to prevent dangerous blood clots that could occur.

Who Should Invest in Compression Socks

If you have any of the following issues and/or symptoms, you should consider investing in a few pairs of compression socks:

  • Working on your feet long (6+) hours at a time
  • Individuals who suffer from varicose veins, spider veins, or who have just had surgery
  • Achiness or heaviness in legs when on them for long periods of time
  • Swelling in legs
  • Blood clots, or post-surgery individuals

Do you know how I can help make this possible for them? I am open to any and all suggestions.

Ask Sarah: Will Medicare Pay for Scooters

Sarah,

As my mother ages, she becomes less and less independent and more dependent on myself and my siblings. I think it is time for her to get a motorized scooter to help her get around easier; however, I am concerned about the costs and what exactly Medicare will cover. Do you have any insight to offer on when Medicare will help pay for a scooter?

Thanks for your help.

Gina –Greenville, Ohio

Hi Gina,

I understand your concerns entirely. It is important that your mom get a motorized scooter as soon as possible in order to help her get around more efficiently and take some of the stress off of you and your siblings; however, Medicare, like you said, can be an extremely confusing topic. Here are some tips to help you determine when Medicare will cover paying for a motorized scooter:

Remember, Medicare may not cover the entire cost of the scooter. There will likely be a 20% cost that you have to cover; however, sometimes this, too, can be covered by insurance.

Gina, we would love to have the opportunity to help your mom find the perfect scooter to fit her everyday needs. Please feel free to give me a call personally at 419.678.4979 or stop in today to look around!

I hope this information is helpful for you and your family.

The Importance of Home Accessibility

Nearly everyone is physically disabled at some point in their life, be it a child who is suffering from a sports-related injury (a broken leg, possibly), or an aging loved one who has been confined to a wheelchair for their own safety. Injuries and disabilities happen far more than we would like to admit, which is why it is important that you have a home environment that is safe, barrier-free and can easily adapt to the needs of you or your loved ones.

3 Reasons To Update Your Home Today

  1. Cut out the stress. By updating your home now–to fit possible needs in the near or distant future–you will save yourself a great deal of stress. Whether it is trying to figure out how you will make the changes to your home financially, or determining how you will find someone who can make the changes happen as quickly as possible, planning ahead can help you reduce stress in the long run!
  2. Get the best products. By planning ahead and being proactive, you can assure you are getting yourself the best products on the market. If you are suddenly hit with the task of making your home accessible quickly, you may not have an adequate amount of time to research what products will work best for you or your loved one.
  3. You can find a carrier you trust. It is important that you find a company that you can trust fully, one that will be there for you when you need them the most. Suddenly realize that you don’t have a home accessibility product that you need? No problem! Call up your local retail store/carrier and have the product delivered and installed in a timely fashion. Plus, they can offer you inside advice on what the best products on the market are and why!

If you are looking to get started on making your home accessible today or in the near future, give the professionals at New Visions Medical a call today at 419.678.4979. We will be more than happy to help!

Ask Sarah: What’s New in Shower Safety?

Dear Sarah,

I have recently had a hard time getting in and out of my shower, as well as struggling with some other day-to-day activities. A friend of mine recently told me that you sell various products for bathroom assistance, and even do some installation yourself. Is this true? If so, what products and services do you offer to help with shower safety?

Thanks for all of your help,

Claudia – Greenville, Ohio

Hi Claudia,

I am very glad you asked about New Visions Medical Equipment’s role in bathroom safety, as we have recently begun changing and expanding our offerings.

First off, did you know that the majority of falls within the home occur in the bathroom? This is why it is vital that you keep your bathroom as safe as possible, and in turn, that is what the staff at New Visions Medical Equipment strives to do!

In regards to our offerings, we provide and install all of your basic shower assistance products. These include items such as hand-held shower heads, grab bars, shower chairs and much more. Not only does New Visions offer the basic shower products, but we also offer services and products that are more extensive, but pertinent to your safety, such as replacing your existing tub with a barrier-free walk-in unit or a Safeway Step.

Our exciting expansion, however, includes entire bathroom remodels (see our Facebook page for pictures and examples of remodel projects we are currently working on!). We know that it is extremely important to you and many others to remain in your own home for as long as possible, but sometimes the bathroom can become a tough obstacle.

This is why we have partnered with Homan Interiors and Best Bath Systems to ensure that your bathroom remodel project goes as smoothly as possible, giving you the bathroom of your dreams, allowing you to remain in your home safely and comfortably!

If you have further questions about how New Visions can help you remain in your home by giving you the bathroom you have always dreamed of, give me, Sarah, a call at 800.617.6795 today!

Using Ramps to Get In and Out of the House

As you age, it will likely become harder and harder for you to complete everyday tasks, such as getting in and out of your house safely and with ease. Which is why New Visions has begun offering home modifications: to help keep you and your loved one safe and independent.

But what exactly are home modifications? Home modifications are changes made to one’s home in order to help adapt the living spaces to meet the needs of your physical limitations. They also help allow you to continue to live independently and safely.

Home modifications can range from something as simple as replacing cabinet door handles, to full-scale construction products, such as the addition of a wheelchair ramp to your front porch, bathroom remodels (showers, tubs, grab bars, etc) and even the widening of doorways! One of the most popular home modification projects includes the addition of ramps to one’s home.

Benefits of Using Ramps

  • Easier access in and out of the home
  • Decreases the risk of falls and accidents
  • If you are in a wheelchair, ramps can allow you to get in and out of the house with ease
  • Promotes independence
  • Ability to stay in your house as long as you wish
  • Increases safety

A recent AARP housing survey showed  that “83% of older Americans want to stay in their current homes for the rest of their lives,” but unfortunately most homes are not designed to accommodate the needs of those over the age of 65. Simple, or even complex, home modification projects, such as the installation of a ramp, can help make your dream of staying in your home forever come true.

If you are unsure of how you will pay for your new ramp, be sure to check out this helpful article: Guide to Paying for Wheelchair Ramps. You can also view our payment options here.

At New Visions it is important to us that you are happy, safe and able to live in your home for as long as you wish, which is why we offer a wide variety of home modification projects in order to keep you and your loved one safe, independent, as well as to prevent any possible accidents. Stop in today or give us a call at 419.678.4979 to learn about the multitude of home modification projects we have to offer!

Ask Sarah: How Can I Convince My Aging Parent They Need a Lift Chair?

Dear Sarah,

My mother has recently been admitted into the nursing home due to her hip surgery, and my father has quickly been losing his strength, especially now that my mom isn’t around to help him do things around the house. I have noticed recently that he has a hard time getting in and out of his recliner. When I suggested he look into getting a lift chair, he completely shut down and stopped listening to me. I think he is afraid that purchasing a lift chair would mean he is losing his independence. Can you help me convince him to see the benefits of purchasing a lift chair? I don’t think he realizes how much it could help him.

Thanks for your advice!

Tammy -Ohio City

Hi Tammy,

Making the transition and admitting that you need more assistance is never an easy feat, especially for our senior loved ones as they age and are unable to do things as easily as they once could. However, it doesn’t have to be. Is your father aware of the many benefits of a lift chair, or were you unable to talk to him at all when you mentioned a lift chair?

Now that your father should have had some time to cool off, I suggest approaching the situation again, but in a more casual tone. Don’t make him feel like he has to purchase a lift chair, but instead list the many benefits (see below) a lift chair could bring him. Maybe try to make a fun afternoon out of going to your local medical equipment store and testing out lift chairs.

Try sitting in a lift chair along with him (bring your kids, too!) so that he doesn’t feel as if he is being pressured. I strongly believe that once your father sits in a chair and realizes how it can help him regain his independence–not hinder it–you will have no problem convincing him (heck, you may not even have to convince him!) to purchase a lift chair.

Here are a few of the many benefits a lift chair can bring:

  • Independence
  • Opportunity to remain in home
  • Ease of mobility
  • More spacious than normal chairs
  • Reduced risk of injury (this one is particularly important, especially now that your mom is no longer living at home!)

I hope you find my advice helpful and that your father sees the importance and advantages of purchasing a lift chair. If you have any further questions, or would like to try out a lift chair in person, please feel free to stop in or give us a call at 419.678.4979.

6 Benefits of Compression Socks for Nurses, Athletes and Travelers

Many people either find themselves asking, “Should I be wearing compression socks?” or have no idea that compression socks could benefit them. If you suffer from various leg and foot issues (such as swelling, varicose veins, Peripheral edema, and many other common diseases), or are on your feet for long periods at a time, then compression socks may be the right fit for you!

Benefits of Compression Socks

Compression socks are often overlooked for use; however, the benefits they provide for individuals such as athletes, travelers, nurses, factory workers, or those in sales are endless.

For example, compression socks offer:

  1. Prevention of varicose veins
  2. Improved blood flow and reduced risk of blood clots
  3. Reduction in fatigue and pain
  4. Better circulation
  5. Decreased swelling of ankles and feet
  6. General coolness to legs

We highly recommend compression socks to the following 3 groups of people in both the younger and older generations:

  1. Nurses and other workers who are on their feet all day – When spending so much time on your feet throughout the day, the constant standing can cause you to experience traumatic leg and foot pain, even after your shift is over. Over time, this can lead to the development of unattractive varicose veins and/or spider veins. We advise wearing compression socks as early as possible in order to prevent problems in the future.
  2. Travelers – Sitting in a car and/or plane for long period of time when traveling can make you extremely uncomfortable, and even cause blood clots to form in your legs because of the lack of movement. If you are traveling for 8 to 10 hours at a time and there aren’t many chances to pull off the road and walk around, blood clots could form and have devastating medical consequences.
  3. Athletes – We all know that athletes push themselves as hard as they can, often resulting in a great deal of fatigue on their muscles. As a result of this, lactic acid can build up in the muscles, causing excessive soreness. Compression socks can help increase blood flow and bring fresh oxygen to the muscles, offering a much quicker muscle recovery after games or practice. Compression socks also have the ability to help prevent shin splints.

Nurses, athletes, and travelers are just three groups who can benefit from wearing compression socks–to help keep their legs healthy, pain-free, and even stylish, thanks to the various new patterns that are offered!

Did you know that New Visions Medical Equipment sells compression socks in both basic and fun patterns? To try your first pair of compression socks, stop in or give us a call at 419.678.4979 today!
